OICL AO Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2025


The Administrative Officer exam follows a three-stage process: Preliminary and Mains Examination followed by the Interview. Refer to the table below to know the marking scheme, total number of questions and duration of Prelims and Mains


Stage 1: Prelims Exam Pattern

  1. There are three sections in the Preliminary Examination: Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and English.
  2. Each section has its own sectional timing, which is 20 minutes.
  3. Each correct answer gives 1 mark.
  4. For each incorrect answer, 0.25 marks will be subtracted.

Stage 2: Mains Exam Pattern

  1. There are 5 sections in the OICL AO Mains Examination: Reasoning, General Awareness, Professional Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude and English.
  2. Each Section carries 40 questions.
  3. The total questions are 200.
  4. Each question carries 1 mark which makes total exam of 200 marks.
  5. 0.25 marks will be deducted for each incorrect attempt.
  6. There is a sectional timing for each section as mentioned in the table below.

Descriptive Test (English Language)

Candidates must score a minimum of marks in each section of the Objective Test to be considered for the Descriptive Test and interview.


  1. The Duration of the Descriptive test is 30 minutes
  2. The total marks of the test are 30


  1. Letter Writing: 10 marks
  2. Essay Writing: 20 marks


Minimum qualifying marks in Descriptive Test:

  1. General: 15 out of 30
  2. SC/ST/PwBD: 13.5 out of 30

Descriptive Test marks will not be considered for interview shortlisting or final selection. It is qualifying in nature.


Stage 3: Interview

Candidates who clear the main examination will be shortlisted for the interview round. About 3 times the number of vacancies are invited per category/stream. The final selection will be based on a combined score, with 80% weightage given to the online test and 20% to the interview
